Microsoft In Talks To Bring Windows To Chrysler Cars

Redmond has always had grand plans for it Windows platform, and with the release of Windows 8 it is getting nearer to seeing its dream become a reality.

The company’s latest operating system already transcends form factors — it powers traditional desktops to notebooks and ultrabooks, even tablets and convertibles. Bring in Windows Phone 8 and Windows Embedded 8 into the picture and the ecosystem seems to look complete.

But Microsoft is not stopping here, it seems.

The software titan is reportedly in talks with Chrysler, the US car maker, to become the sole provider of the infotainment system installed in its cars.

You can find out more details on Automotive News which has all the insights, and it appears that Microsoft’s Uconnect 5.0 system that is powered by Windows and is already installed on Fiat 500L could replace the existing Uconnect system available in Chrysler models like the 2013 Ram 1500.

This particular system utilizes a 5-inch touchscreen display and supports an impressively wide array of devices that includes everything from smartphones and tablets.

If the deal goes through, Chrysler models could get this new system as soon as next year.

Microsoft has long envisioned and aimed to provide in-car connectivity for mobile devices, and a version of its infotainment system powered by Windows 8 would make all sorts of sense.

Japan’s All Nippon Airways put its fleet of Boeing 787s back in service Sunday. If you remember, the Dreamliners were grounded for four months after two separate airplanes had issues with their batteries overheating.

The BBC reports that the first Dreamliner flight landed at Tokyo’s Haneda airport after a short flight from Sapporo today. The BBC adds:

“Other airlines have already resumed 787 flights, but ANA is Boeing’s biggest Dreamliner customer, with 17 planes. Sunday’s Dreamliner flight was the first of five scheduled by ANA in May, before the airline restarts a full commercial schedule on 1 June.

“It ran its first test flights in late April.

“ANA operates more than a third of all Dreamliners currently in service, and has another 36 on order.”

As USA Today reports, after the battery accidents Boeing “redesigned the battery in a way that makes fires less likely and easier to control if they do happen” and the “Federal Aviation Administration approved the plan in April.”
